UAE May Open Mission in Kiev
ABU DHABI — The UAE is expected to open its first diplomatic mission in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, in the first quarter of next year, a top official in the Embassy of Ukraine told Khaleej Times.
This was stated by Ukrainian Charge d’Affaires, Oleksandr Khomiak, while giving details of the visit of his country’s Foreign Minister Petro Poroshenko to the UAE on December 20-21.
Many Ukrainians wish to travel to the UAE but find it difficult to obtain a visa as they have to travel to Moscow, Russia, for it. So, the opening of the diplomatic mission in Kiev will open new avenues and bolster relations between the two countries in politics, trade and tourism, Khomiak said.
According to Khomiak, during Poroshenko’s visit to the UAE, top officials from both sides agreed on opening the UAE mission in Kiev.
During the visit, Poroshenko
met Foreign Minister Shaikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan and discussed ways to promote bilateral ties in
different fields.
Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko’s historic visit to the UAE on November 16-17, 2009 precisely opened a new page in relations with the UAE, Khomiak pointed out.
“The UAE officials also showed interest in the field of agriculture and discussed related matters with our foreign minister. So, we hope that these two visits of our top level officials had been very successful in cementing bilateral ties in all fields,” Khomiak said.
“We are also open for cooperation in visa-free travel for Emiratis to Ukraine, Khomiak added.
“The opening of the embassy will be in the interest of our people as well as in promotion of tourism to the UAE. I am sure after opening the embassy the UAE will receive more visitors from Ukraine,” he said.
A number of Ukrainians travel to Turkey as it offers on-arrival-visa for us, he said. “We are interested in supplying aeroplanes to the UAE as Ukraine manufactures high quality passenger jets ‘Model Antonov-148’ having 68-85 seats with a service range of 2,000km to 4,400km. These aircraft are the special purpose-built aircraft having maximum comfort level for passengers,” Khomiak explained.
“On visit of UAE officials to Kiev,
we will elaborate it to them. We
have already orders for the aircraft from several countries worldwide,” the CDA said.
Khomiak congratulated the Ukrainian community in the UAE on the Christmas Day and the New Year for health, prosperity and peace. Most of the Ukrainians are Orthodox Christians and celebrate Christmas on January 7 each year.
