UAE, Kuwait for broadening scope of GCC cooperation

ABU DHABI — The UAE and Kuwait have underlined the need to forge ahead with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) with a view to broadening scope of cooperation among its member states.

This came during a meeting between the President, His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and His Highness Shaikh Sabah Al Ahmed Al Sabah, the Amir of Kuwait, in Abu Dhabi yesterday. His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai was also present during the talks.

Shaikh Sabah is in the UAE as part of a tour of GCC countries. Shaikh Khalifa welcomed Shaikh Sabah and his delegation and also expressed his well wishes as he tours the region.

Shaikh Khalifa and Shaikh Sabah affirmed the strong historical and fraternal relations between the UAE and Kuwait, noting that the pillars of these relations were laid down by the late Shaikh Zayed and the late Shaikh Jaber.

The UAE-Kuwaiti summit also discussed bilateral relations in addition to other issues of mutual interest. The leaders underlined the importance of close coordination and consultation on regional and international issues.

They also underlined the need to forge ahead with the GCC with a view to broadening the scope of cooperation. The GCC, they said, has proved itself to be a model worth emulating regionally and internationally.

The Amir of Kuwait commended the leading role played by the UAE under the leadership of President Shaikh Khalifa to cement inter-GCC cooperation and carve a place for the organisation internationally.

After the meeting, Shaikh Khalifa decorated Shaikh Sabah with the Zayed Order, the highest order conferred to heads of state and other personalities of the same stature. The bestowal of the Order is a token of recognition of the enormous contribution made by Shaikh Sabah to the progress of the GCC as well as Islamic and Arab world. Later, Shaikh Khalifa held a banquet in honour of the Kuwaiti Amir and his accompanying delegation. Later yesterday, Shaikh Khalifa accompanied Shaikh Sabah on a tour of Abu Dhabi corniche and some of the city’s landmark areas.

Shaikh Khalifa and Shaikh Sabah also toured the Marina Mall on Abu Dhabi’s breakwater.

Shaikh Sabah said he was impressed with the progress being made by the UAE under the wise leadership of Shaikh Khalifa.

He also expressed his wishes of further progress and prosperity to the people of the UAE.
