UAE keen to boost ties with Russia

ABU DHABI — General Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces yesterday received Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who is currently visiting the UAE as part of a regional tour.

Shaikh Mohammed welcomed Lavrov and praised the growing relations between the UAE and Russia. He expressed UAE’s keenness to further enhance cooperation with Russia in the political, economic and cultural fields.

Lavrov conveyed greetings of President Vladimir Putin to the President, His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and to Shaikh Mohammed and his wishes of progress and prosperity to the people of the UAE.

The Russian Foreign Minister briefed Shaikh Mohammed on the outcome of the tour recently made by President Putin to a number of countries of the region. He said that his country was still determined to continue its efforts to resume peace talks and to reach a peaceful solution to the Iranian nuclear crisis.

Gen. Shaikh Mohammed reiterated UAE’s support to the efforts aimed at achieving peace in the region. He emphasised the need to utilise the positive atmosphere following the Makkah agreement reached by the Plestinians to revive the peace process and to end the problems of the Palestinian people.

He also expressed UAE’s support to the quartete’s efforts to reach a comprehensive and just settlement in the middle east and to the efforts aimed at finding a peaceful solution to the Iranian nuclear crisis.

Gen. Shaikh Mohammed also stressed the importance of stopping the cycle of violence in Iraq and ending the suffering of Iraqi people to maintain a unified and stable Iraq.

Gen. Shaikh Mohammed conveyed Shaikh Khalifa’s greetings to President Putin. Present during the meeting was Russian Ambassador Andrey Zakharov.

Earlier, Shaikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Foreign Minister, received his counterpart at Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi. They discussed matters of mutual interest and topics realting to regional and international issues.

Lavrov said, Russia respects efforts by Arab Gulf countries to acquire nuclear energy capability and has confidence that they will put those programmes under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and that they will be in line with the nuclear non-proliferation treaty.

Shaikh Abdullah briefed Lavrov on the forthcoming visit by the Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council to Vienna to discuss cooperation of the regional organisation with the International Atomic Energy aAgency (IAEA).

The UAE and Russia agree that it is necessary to resolve the Middle East problem through dialogue and spare no effort to help Fatah and Hamas to implement the recently-concluded Makkah accord, he observed.

Shaikh Abdullah stressed that the UAE supports the approach of the quartet which will be holding its next meeting in Berlin. The meeting also rdiscussed preparations for the forthcoming meetings of the UAE-Russia joint committee to be held in April or May in Moscow.

The Russian foreign minister expressed satisfaction over the existing trade relations between Russia and the UAE. He said that the trade volume between the two countries was expected to reach $1 billion soon. He added that an agreement has been reached with the UAE to increase investments between the two countries.

Shaikh Abdullah also received Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis yesterday. During the meeting, they reviewed efforts to boost bilateral ties in various areas and discussed the situation in the Gulf region, Iraq and the Middle East.

The Greek minister invited Shaikh Abdullah to visit Greece. Shaikh Abdullah accepted the invitation.

Present at the meeting were a number of foreign ministry officials, Greek Ambassador, Panayotis Theodoracopoulos and members of the Greek delegation.
