Joy Alukkas, Chairman and Managing Director, Joyalukkas Group, is a self-made man who was inspired by his father to follow the path of entrepreneurship. "I dreamt of creating an organisation that would keep creating employment opportunities for many and a legacy that stood for dynamism, innovation and growth," he says in an interview with Khaleej Times.
As a child, Joy was clear he wanted to be a businessman. Slowly as he grew up he nurtured a dream wanting to create a world-class organisation. He is blessed to have managed to accomplish his dreams. Joyalukkas today is one of the most trusted names in jewellery and an organisation that many aspire to be a part of.
"Whatever I've achieved so far is based on my determination and commitment to make this dream a reality. I don't take life too seriously, but the accomplishment of my dreams is something I relentlessly pursue in a joyful manner," he adds.
Joy stresses that he is not after recognition but strives to achieve his goal. "For me, success is an opportunity for creating employment to several talented youngsters who can thrive in the environment. It gives me happiness when I see my staff, with their ability and commitment, advance in life. Any recognition is indeed a motivation that generates positive energy and an assurance that I'm on the right track," the CMD says.
The secret to his success is passion, commitment, determination and sheer hard work. "I've tried to avoid ego come in the way of business. If you refuse to admit failure, it's like sinking sand, you just dig yourself deeper into it. I surely cannot do everything on my own, so the right people matter, people who understand my vision and are committed to it," he reveals.
Joy does not pursue success. He just thoroughly enjoys everything he ventures into and commits 100 per cent to it. "Success or failure can be due to many reasons. However, if you enjoy what you do and worry less about the outcome, I guess, in the end, you are happy with the journey and learn better. My key strengths would be total commitment to everything I do, my determination to complete things, to quickly adapt to changing situations, quick decision making and the ability to hire and retain the right talent."
Obstacles in life
It was not just smooth sailing for Joy. He has faced situations like the Gulf War, where survival for any business was difficult. There were a number of issues that needed mental and emotional commitment to overcome. "I survived such situations by sheer guts and hope. This has taught me to deal with any obstacle in a calm manner and overcome it," he remembers.
His key lesson in life is not to take any situation or outcome for granted. "Things change and sometimes you are faced with issues you never anticipate but the key is to not give up and keep pursuing your goal or desired outcome. I always plan well but at the same time work keeping in mind that anything can go wrong and so am always prepared to face the situation head-on," says the CMD.
Joy's parents are his role models. "My father inspired me to be an entrepreneur and taught me many lessons of being a good businessman. My mother taught me to remain humble always. She also taught me strong family values," he shares.
"With the support of my family i.e. my wife Jolly, who in addition to looking after the family also oversees all our Group CSR activities, my son John Paul, who as Executive Director oversees our international operations and my loyal team, I'm hopeful to go further. The growth of any organisation transmits hopes and welfare to all who are near and dear to it. My advice to the upcoming generation is to be always hopeful and committed. With determination, passion and commitment, anything is possible," he concludes. - suchitra@khaleejtimes.com
