UAE gets nine extra flight frequencies

DUBAI - The UAE has recently been granted nine additional flight frequencies following talks between the UAE and Philippine aviation authorities, and it is expected to come as a big relief to Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in the UAE who have long been complaining of lack of available flights and full bookings during Christmas and other peak seasons.

"I am most happy that the negotiations turned out to be a big success in the end. Hopefully, Emirates airline and Gulf Air will work out programmes that will increase the load not only of OFWs but also of other people to visit the Philippines," Jose Arthur Ampeso, Consul-General and Charge d'Affaires at the Philippine Embassy, told Khaleej Times following the air services consultation meeting held at the Office of the Department of Transportation and Communication in Manila from March 5-7. It may be recalled that the Civil Aeronautics Board in Manila had postponed the scheduled air talks in April last year, and the rescheduled talks on September 25 had been similarly postponed.

Mr Ampeso, who attended the three-day meeting, said that the frequencies that were granted to the UAE were four weekly flights to and from Manila, and five weekly flights to and from Clark, Cebu International Airport or other points in the Philippines excluding Manila. The four frequencies will comprise two flights for Dubai (Emirates) and two flights for Abu Dhabi (Gulf Air). The frequencies are in addition to the six weekly flights operated by Emirates, and the two weekly flights of Gulf Air.

"The nine reciprocal frequencies which had been currently granted may be operated by the Philippine through its designated carriers to any point in the UAE. With respect to cargo operations, designated carriers of each party are allowed to operate more than the present 200 tonnes per week per direction provided that such operations are to and from Clark," he explained. He added that the designated carriers of each party may also operate more than the present 200 tonnes per week in each direction to and from Manila provided that such increase above 200 tonnes per week shall be subject to a commercial agreement between the designated carriers of each party.
