UAE Denies
Reports of Human Trafficking Cases

DUBAI - The UAE has denied international reports that there were about 10,000 human trafficking cases this year in the country.

According to a Federal National Council official, the number was 11.

FNC Affairs Ministry Secretary-General Dr Saeed Al Ghafli said distinction should be made between prostitution and human trafficking and that the UAE was not targeted for human trafficking.

He further stated that considerable steps were being taken to protect the rights of children.

Al Ghafli, speaking at a symposium titled ‘Towards Community Awareness’ said the international reports which detailed the number of human trafficking cases as 10,000 was based on unverified information provided by the victims or NGOS or media reports.

He said that the human trafficking law was implemented two years ago and the legal authorities including the police and the court officials, need time to implement the rules.

He confirmed that the UAE has taken many steps to prevent human trafficking and to protect children who were employed as camel jockeys. The country has returned 1,077 such children to their countries in coordination with the Unicef

He said that UAE has adopted 36 recommendations and rejected 15 which violate Islam Shariaand UAE norms and values while another 17 recommendations will be reviewed.

He said the UAE has also signed an agreement with the Unicef to rehabilitate the children.

The Dubai Foundation for Woman and Children which give support to neglected or abused children have also been contacted by the authorities.

Dr Mohammed Al Murr, Director of the General Department of Human Right of the Dubai Police said that UAE laws have included articles to preserve child rights.

Article number 16 of the constitution stipulated that the community members should give care to children and to protect youngsters and the disabled.

Major General Khamis Mattar Al Mazina said the UAE has approved all international agreements regarding the child rights and is included in the UAE constitution.
