A Chinese student has broken the world record for "speed skipping" in a tournament held in the UAE this week.
The VLCC World Inter-School Rope Competition at the Nad Al Sheba Sports Complex was attended by 250 students from nine countries: UAE, Iran, Egypt, India, Pakistan, Belgium, Austria, Malaysia and China.
In the 14 to 17 years boys category, the world record for speed skipping was broken by Chinese student Cenxiao Lin from the Qi Xing school in Guang Zhou Province. During the event, he managed 111 revolutions of his rope over the course of 30 seconds, breaking his own record of 105.
For the event, the "skippers" were organised into different age groups, such as under 11, 11 to 14, and 14 to 17 years.
Among the local schools that participated were Sheffield Private School, Updtown School Mirdif, Delhi Public School Sharjah, Indian International School, Oxford International Dubai, Our Own English High School and Indian Academy.
The winner of the competition was the Qi Xing school, China, followed by Oscar Romero College, Belgium, and the Government Boys Senior Secondary School, India.
"It has been a great experience for the students in the UAE to interact with others of their age groups from different backgrounds, (who) share interest in the same sport," said Mohammed Saleem Khan, director of burnish sports academy. "This event has helped them observe, and get inspired to improve their techniques. I hope the event is a step towards many such opportunities."
