In remarks ahead of the United Nations’ World Humanitarian Day, Shaikh Hamdan urged the international community to shoulder its full responsibility to alleviate poverty, hunger and the suffering of the increasing number underprivileged people in hot spots worldwide.

Shaikh Hamdan expressed hopes that the current global financial and economic crisis would not affect the international efforts to minimize poverty and food shortages.

“We hope that the donor nations would not slash their aid to the developing nations because of the financial crisis,” he added.

He also warned against the consequences of climate change and water scarcity on the poor and underprivileged communities.

“The world’s powers of the good should make the United Nations’ World Humanitarian Day an opportunity to mobilize all efforts and capabilities to save human life and draw up alternative plans to face the possible consequences of the current food and financial crises,” Shaikh Hamdan said.

In light of this, “the UAE which early recognized the size of challenges resulting from food shortages and the financial crisis continues to play a vital role in global efforts to counter the consequences on humanity.” he added.

He hailed the generosity of the UAE as an authentic value and approach to champion the weak and the underprivileged as it continue to take up the humanitarian responsibility in all circumstances on the directives by the prudent leadership to help friendly and sisterly peoples.

The humanitarian initiatives launched by the UAE promote the unique humanitarian approach of the UAE to help peoples and countries worldwide suffering from crises and disasters, Sheikh Hamdan stressed.

He hailed the efforts of the United Nations humanitarian and aid agencies as well as their partnership with the UAE humanitarian agencies to help counter the consequences of food shortages on stability and security in fragile regions.

Created in 2008, World Humanitarian Day raises awareness of humanitarian assistance around the world, and those who risk their lives to provide it. Set to be one of the largest United Nations public outreach initiatives in history.

This year’s World Humanitarian Day will feature a performance by one of the world’s top musical artists, simulcasting cities around the world and online through social media platforms. With the theme ‘People Helping People,’ the United Nation’s annual World Humanitarian Day aims to shine a spotlight on the unsung heroes who provide unconditional support and contributions for those in need.
