The deceased were identified as Deepak Devadas (19) and Nijin Sunder Pillai (19). Both were second year BCom students of Universal Empire Educational Institute, the centre of Mahatma Gandhi University located in Knowledge Village.
Lijo Alex, a classmate of the deceased, was injured in the accident and was taken to Rashid Hospital. He was discharged after treatment but Dubai police have taken him in custody for interrogation.
According to eyewitnesses, the accident took place at about 5am when the students’ car hit a road divider. “Nijin, who was driving the car, died on the spot and Deepak died later in Rashid Hospital. Lijo, who was sitting in the back seat, had a narrow escape,” said an eyewitness.
According to an official from the college, the trio were heading to Qusais from Karama after spending a weekend there.
“The dead bodies have been kept in Rashid Hospital morgue. We are trying to render all the help to the grieving family,” he said, expressing the shock over the untimely death of two students. Both the dead students were living in Dubai with their families hailing from the southern Indian state of Kerala.
“Both Deepak and Nijin attended their classes on Wednesday. They were good students and never created any problems for the institute. It is a loss for the institute and we are praying for their souls,” the official added.
