According to an official at the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), motorists using the WTC roundabout and the adjoining underpass criss-crossed with traffic coming in from the WTC interchange (from Satwa/Dhiyafah) and this created a bottleneck during peak hours. “The location was one of the 15 or 20 singled out by the Authority for correction this year. We are almost through with a total of 10 such improvements," said Ali Mohammed Jassim, Construction Supervision Manager at the RTA's Roads Department.

Jassim noted that earlier, motorists coming in from the three different points (the WTC underpass, WTC roundabout and the interchange) had to change two or three lanes in a short span of about 350 metres depending on where they were coming from and where they wanted to go.

He explained motorists coming in from the WTC underpass and headed for Al Garhoud would have to change lanes to the right while the incoming traffic from the interchange or roundabout at the WTC would be changing lanes to their left if they were headed towards Karama or Bur Dubai.

Following the opening of the two additional lanes the hazard created by "weaving" traffic is now completely solved, he said.

The department has also made major improvements to the approach on the Maktoum Bridge from Deira to Bur Dubai side. The one lane exit on the Baniyas Road that connects with the Al Maktoum Bridge near the Marriott Executive Apartments has been expanded to two lanes to ease congestion during rush hours, he explained.
