Turkey backs Zayed's proposal on Iraq

DOHA - Turkey voiced yesterday its support for proposals floated by the UAE President, His Highness Shaikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, on the Iraq issue at the March 1 Arab summit in Egypt.

We in Turkey bless and back any political and diplomatic initiative seeking a peaceful solution in Iraq," Turkish Prime Minister Abdullah Gul said when asked about Shaikh Zayed's ideas on Iraq. He added that Ankara would be in favour of any proposals aimed at finding a peaceful settlement to the Iraqi crisis.

Shaikh Zayed called on the Iraq leadership to step down to spare the region from war.

Report on Doha Summit

In Abu Dhabi, meanwhile, President Shaikh Zayed has received a report on the outcome of the emergency Islamic summit held in Doha.

The report was handed over to Shaikh Zayed by Shaikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Director-General of the President's Office and Head of the UAE delegation to the summit.

The report included the outcome of the summit, held by the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC), issues discussed and bilateral talks held with other delegates who participated in the conference.

The summit concluded in Doha on Wednesday.
