Traveller Pleads Not Guilty in Drug Case

DUBAI — A man pleaded not guilty to possessing hashish and told the presiding judge of the Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance on Tuesday that he was given a packet to be handed over to a person in Dubai.

A police officer said the Anti–narcotic Department of the Dubai Police had received information about a 28-year-old Egyptian, the defendant, who was bringing drugs to deliver it toa resident. On May 22, 2009, the police officials set a trap at the Dubai International Airport after they coordinated with a Department of Naturalisation officer. When the defendant reached the first check point his bag was searched .

The police officers found a bag which contained two trousers, two shaving cream tubes and medication. On further investigation, the tubes were found to be containing the shaving cream as well two pieces of hashish. The accused said that ‘somebody’ had asked him to give it to another person who was waiting for him outside the airport.
