As many as 84 cartons, each having 50 small packets of betel leaves and weighing about 200gm each, were seized from the pick-up, he said.

Adil Ali Al Deek, Chief of the Environmental and Heath Department in Ras Al Khaimah Municipality, said the vehicle, belonging to an Asian businessman, was stopped outside a retail shop. Two Asian workers, who were travelling in the vehicle, were allegedly helping the Asian businessman.

According to Adil, this was the biggest quantity of betel leaves seized in the recent years and the Dh20,000 fine is the highest for such an offence in recent years. RAK Municipality had banned betel leaves and niswar type of tobacco as many retail outlets were selling these products to schoolchildren, especially those from Asian countries.
