Third symposium on ICU sepsis

SHARJAH —The Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine in coordination with Lily International organised its third symposium on ICU sepsis at the Millennium Hotel in Sharjah, yesterday.

The event was held under the patronage of Shaikh Mohammed bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Director of Sharjah Medical Zone. The programme was attended by Shaikh Mohammed Al Qasimi, medical experts from various government and private hospitals and medical centre in the UAE as well as number of officials from various private establishments in Sharjah and Dubai.

During the programme four lectures were delivered by experts and specialists in the field of Anaesthesia and ICU. The first lecture was presented by Professor Dr Josef Shokry, Senior Consultant, Anaesthesias and Head of Deparment of ICU at Al Qasimi Hospital, who offered an introduction on ICU Management of sepsis. The second lecture was delivered by Ashraf Al Houfy, MPPS, MF Pulmonology MRCP in UK who talked about the Pathophysiology of sepsis. He said that the length of stay and increasing costs of sepsis will lead to a cause of death among non-cardiac intensive care patients.

Dr Hassan Foad, Specialist at Rashid Hospital, discussed the global guideline for management of severe sepsis during the third lecture while Dr Mohammed Baker Ali, Head of the ICU department at Dubai Hospital presented a paper on the patient identification and time to treat with activated protein C (rhAPC) during the fourth lecture. He also explained that the rhPC is recommended in patients at high risk of death.

Speaking to Khaleej times Dr Joseph Shokery said that the sympoisum is aimed at educating medical experts about the development guideline of severe sepsis and septic shock.
