The Fruit and Vegetable Market, previously located at Al Hamriyah, bustles with activity from the break of dawn. Work starts early for the vendors and labourers with trucks and vans carrying varieties of vegetables and fruits arriving from different countries and ports, to meet the demands of the different emirates. The products are fresh and available at the best prices.

Vendors are generally friendly and only too eager to show off their products. Of course, they even give you a free taste of the fruits they sell.

It’s not just wholesale that happens here. Families come in droves to strike a good bargain. Boxes and boxes of fruits and vegetables are sold by the hour. The strong smell of onions combines with the sweet smell of the musk melon. Now it’s the pleasant smell of mangoes that wafts in the air.

It is an enjoyable exercise, haggling with the vendors and finally coming away with a car load of vegetable and fruits, with the satisfaction of having struck a good deal. It is a feeling one has to experience, says KT photographer Leslie Pableo.
