Director M. Raja could be called the superhit remake director of superhit films. In a career that started with Hanuman Junction in Telugu, a remake of the superhit Malayalam film Thenkashi Pattanam, he has achieved a level of success that few directors can dream of.
His winning streak was defined when he teamed up with younger brother Jayam Ravi to direct remakes such as Jayam, Santosh Subramaniam and Thillalangadi (which was further remade in Hindi as Salman Khan's Kick).
Having directed Vijay for Velayudham (again a remake of the Telugu film Azad) in 2011, Raja now makes a return after four years with an original film titled Thani Oruvan.
This time, he has roped in Ravi again, as well as a stellar cast including Nayanthara, Arvind Swami and Nassar. Raja says the film is experimental and narrates a story that he has been toying with in his mind for years.
Packaged as an action thriller, Thani Oruvan is about one man pushing the boundaries to achieve justice. On the face of it, it is therefore another good-versus-bad story but with a twist.
Ravi plays a cop but one who works for what is called an 'Organised Crime Intelligence Unit' while Arvind Swami plays the villain. Raja promises that Thani Oruvan packs in enough surprises to keep viewers glued to the screen.
