The relatives of patients and doctors also took part in the celebrations, which included games, entertainment, traditional songs and dances, horse rides, and food and beverages.

In keeping with the UAE National Day theme, a large heritage tent was erected depicting the traditional lifestyle and culture of the seven emirates.

Local specialities and desserts were offered to all the guests while the children took part in competitions and games arranged for them.

Thalassaemia Centre Coordinator Dr Issam Dohair said, “We hold celebrations on the occasion of the UAE National Day. However, this is the first time that patients from outside the centre and from other emirates took part in the celebrations. The patients of different ages and nationalities expressed gratitude for the country’s visionary and extremely generous leadership.”

“We are happy to be able to celebrate the 36th National Day,” said Jamal Hussain, a Thalassaemia patient. “On behalf of all the Thalassaemia patients I would like to thank the country’s leadership in offering us these services.”

“I cannot tell how grateful I am to this centre. I received treatment here and I went on with my life normally, I have raised a little family. I don’t know where I would have been now without the support of this centre. The UAE authorities are giving their utmost attention to the Thalassaemia patients and we feel very secure thanks to them,” said another patient.
