This year the event was opened to the public due to the interest generated by the selected topic which is relevant to the country's environmental status.

In her opening speech, Habiba Al Marashi, Chairperson of EEG, reiterated the need for each person to check his or her lifestyle, both in terms of the things consumed and thrown away, as both these things are accounted in the computation of the collective ecological footprint of the country. She noted that the UAE should also work for environmental protection to complement fast economic growth.

The workshop was conducted by EEG as a part of its initiative as a civil society organisation to increase awareness.
