Swede Gets 4-year Jail for Assaulting Ex-wife

DUBAI - A 46-year-old Swedish manager will spend four years in jail and pay Dh1,000 fine after the Criminal Court of First Instance found him guilty of trespassing other’s property and 
assaulting his former wife and her 
husband. The court also ordered him to pay an interim compensation 
of Dh20,100.

According to court records, the fight between the manager and his 44-year-old former wife took place over the way the accused was bringing up their son. The incident took place around 8pm on January 16 last year at the woman’s villa in Umm Suqeim.

In her statement, the woman said that he punched her on the face and pushed her hard to the ground and kicked her.

The complainant’s husband intervened after he heard the noise inside the house. “I went to the villa’s entrance and saw my wife being beaten by her ex-husband. I had to intervene to push him away from her.”

By the time the police arrived on the scene, the fight was over.

The woman suffered scratches and bruises on her body, and her present husband lost a tooth.

The woman’s husband, who is a 54-year-old pilot, was also charged with physical assault, but his case will be referred to the Court of Misdemeanours.

Worker Jailed for Stealing from Warehouse

A 23-year-old Indian worker was sentenced to six months in jail after the Criminal Court of First Instance found him guilty of stealing control boards worth Dh66,000 from the warehouse of his civil engineering company.

He will be deported after serving his jail term.

An electronics engineer at the company told the police that on November 6 last year he and other staff discovered that six control boards were missing from the company’s warehouse. The boards were meant for controlling the sound, video, lighting and air-conditioning systems.

When the security guards screened the CCTV they saw the defendant enter the warehouse around 6.30pm on that day. When they confronted him, the worker admitted to stealing the boards, but said that he thought they were mere video games.

One Jailed, Six Others of Burglar Gang Acquitted

The Criminal Court of First Instance on Wednesday sentenced a member of an Armenian gang to one year in jail followed by deportation for burgling an apartment in Muraqqabat area and stealing gold jewellery and Dh100,500 in cash.

However, the court panel, presided by Judge Fahmi Mounir Fahmi, acquitted six other members of the gang, including two women, one of them pregnant, in the case.

As per the court records, the burglary took place on June 23 last year when the tenant was out of town.

When he came back, he found his house’s door lock broken.

The gang members are accused in three other burglary cases too.

The prosecution has charged them with stealing valuables worth more than Dh1,535,000 from three apartments when their residents were out of the country.

Worker Pleads Not Guilty to Molestation Charge

A 20-year-old Indian worker on Wednesday pleaded not guilty to molesting a woman compatriot near a building’s elevator.

He is standing trial in the Criminal Court of First Instance.

The 32-year-old complainant said that on November 9 last year as she was waiting for the elevator to go up to her apartment in a building in Al Ghusais, she noticed the defendant rushing towards her. She had bags in her hands. As the man allegedly hugged her from behind, she screamed for help.

The man fled the scene, but was later spotted by the woman’s husband near the building. When confronted, he begged forgiveness and requested the woman not to inform the police. However, the couple reported the matter to the police.

The defendant told the police that his shoulder brushed the woman accidentally as he came out of the elevator.

Though he claimed that he went to the building to meet a friend, he could not recall his friend’s name.

He offered to pay to the complainant any amount for withdrawal of her complaint, but denied the molestation charge.

The verdict is expected on March 15.

Hotel Cleaner Accused of Trying to Steal Dh69,000 from Room

A Bangladeshi cleaner stood trial in the Criminal Court of First Instance on Wednesday on the charge of trying to steal Dh69,000 belonging to a hotel guest. As per the court records, the 24-year-old defendant tried to steal Dh69,000 belonging to one of the guests of the hotel where he worked as cleaner on January 8 this year.

The hotel’s security guards found the money hidden inside the detergent trolley used by the accused.

A hotel staff told the prosecution that the Bangladeshi took advantage of the guest’s absence from the room to steal the money kept in the safe. The defendant had admitted to stealing the money when confronted by the guards. He tried to run away but was caught. The verdict is expected on March 15.
