Suzanne Mubarak named Rashid Humanitarian Personality of 2006

DUBAI — Egypt’s First Lady Suzanne Mubarak has been declared the recipient of the Rashid Humanitarian Personality Award for the year 2006.

Shaikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chief Executive of Emirates Airlines and the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Rashid Paediatric Therapy Centre in Dubai, made this announcement at the Press conference at the Le Meridien Hotel here yesterday. The award is given by the centre every two years.

Also present at the Press conference were Ahmed Khoury, founder of the Centre, Tawheed Abdullah, Board Member of the Centre, Chief Executive of the Gold Council and Head of the Damas Group, and Iqbal Khoury, Co-founder of the Centre.

Speaking at the Press conference, Shaikh Ahmed said social welfare organisations throughout the Arab world voted for this Award.

He added: “Mrs. Mubarak deserved this award. She is a pioneer in humanitarian and charity work. She has a special interest in children with special needs. In winning this award, she proves the presence and ability of the Arab woman to share and give. Women are equal partners in the process of development.”

Mohammed Saed Obeid, the Egyptian Ambassador to the UAE, said, “Mrs. Mubarak is a pioneer in working for people with special needs.”

Tawheed Abdullah, the sponsor of the event said, “By honouring her, we are actually honouring all Arab women. This region needs continued efforts to eliminate poverty and illiteracy.”

In preparation for this award, the supervising committee distributed 80 000 questionnaires to a number of embassies, consulates and organisations working for the welfare of people with special needs in more than 15 countries across the Arab world. The committee received 70,810 completed questionnaires by fax and mail. Mubarak received 37 per cent of the votes. The award is one of the most prominent events organised by the Rashid Centre.

Previous recipients of the award include His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, Shaikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Minister of Finance and Industry, Prince Talal bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, Shaikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud and former Lebanese prime minister, late Rafik Hariri.
