He gave the instructions during the live phone-in programme on Sharjah TV and Radio on Thursday after an Emirati woman, Umm Azari, aired her daughter’s plight.

Dr Shaikh Sultan granted her daughter a full scholarship at the Faculty of Medicine in Sharjah University, and ordered the university to return the fee collected from her in the first semester.

Narrating her story, Umm Azari said she is the only breadwinner of her two daughters, and that she cannot afford the tuition fees, which amount to Dh90,000 a year, of her daughter studying medicine. When she scored 94 per cent aggregate in the General Secondary School Certificate Exams, Azari applied to an entity, which grants scholarships to Emiratis in Sharjah, but her application was rejected on the grounds that her passport address is in Ajman.

The woman then approached a government department in Abu Dhabi, where officials told her that there was a free scholarship for her daughter in Sharjah. She then approached Sharjah University. University officials told her that her daughter is not eligible for the scholarship. “Accordingly, I paid the first instalment of fees so that my daughter’s dream to be a doctor is not broken midway,” she recalled. — news@khaleejtimes.com
