Sub-tenants get time to obtain rent contracts

Mohammad Abdullah, Deputy Manager of the Rents Department, said the department had so far given new contracts to 278 sub-tenants, while the previous tenancy contracts with sub-landlords were terminated.

He also pointed that there are three conditions by which sub-tenants can obtain legitimate tenancy contracts in their name. The first is to use the rented property for family use, in order to provide them a chance for settlement. Secondly, the sub-tenancy contract must have been issued before August 2006, and thirdly, the rented property should not be have been obtained through the rent draw conducted by the department.

Abdullah said the grace period will end on December 1, after which the department will refer the matter to the Rent Disputes Settlement Committee which, in turn, will order eviction after cancelling the tenancy contract to make it available through the rent draw scheme.
