According to Hamza Al Hashim and Farouq Essawi, frequent users of the Emirates Highway, there have been several accidents caused by stray camels and cattle moving freely on the highway. A person lost his life when a stray camel suddenly appeared in front of his car, leading to an accident, they said.

"The Ajman Department of Municipality and Planning are aware of this menace and have assured to come up with a solution," says Muhiman Kazi, another motorist.

"There is a serious problem of stray goats and camels in most cities and towns. The way to deal with the problem, however, is to look for solutions that benefit a civilised society," Adnan, another motorist commented.

Saif Al Shamis, Deputy Director of Ajman Municipality, said the civic body was making all efforts to solve the problem by organising special campaigns to minimise the number of stray animals on the highway. The municipality's workers trap these animals and keep them in a temporary shelter, till their owner comes and pays the fine to reclaim it. The owners are also made to give a written undertaking that the animals would not be allowed to stray.

If the owner of the animal is known to the Municipality's workers, they are informed and asked to pay the fine, besides making good for any damage that the animals would have caused to others' properties, he said.

The municipality has also taken up regular monitoring of the highway and other city roads to minimise the number of stray animals.
