Straight talking kids

IT WAS sort of the mouth feeding the spoon, when children in Sharjah, without actually taking to task their elders, put forward in the sweetest possible manner, and we are sure in the sweetest possible voices too, that it would do a lot of good for everyone concerned if the kids were given their ‘daily nutritious food’.

Now that’s a demand that is not alien to kids. Children need their food, and if it is nutritious it would do to them and the world round them a deal of good. And it is gratifying to know that the children of today know their nutrition so well. One of them even put the elders on notice with the observation that most of the food on offer at canteens contributed to obesity, and lacked any nutritional value.

The kids also lifted the lid on talk that children liked chips and sweets. No sir, the kids of today are not a chip of the same old block who were the kids of yesterday. Today’s child knows his bread and butter better than yesterday’s, and come to think of it, he might even junk the butter (also the bread) if it is found to contain too many calories.

The children, who were all members of the Child Consultative Council, have proven once and for all that the food, and the facilities that go with the food, should match the high standards of the country. Children might be thought of being at that age when just playing with building blocks would satisfy all their urges, but we forget that children are also the builders of tomorrow, and that we need to build a healthy tomorrow.
