Stern warning to importers of food items

SHARJAH - Sharjah Municipality issued last month warnings to 25 importers and producers of food products and soft drinks for violating the hygienic and health rules.

According to a report on the activities of the Central Food Control Laboratory, the laboratory conducted 3,061 tests on 1,225 imported food items of which 1.7 per cent of them were found unfit for human consumption. The report added that the lab also conducted 2,624 tests on 955 food items from the local market of which 2.2 per cent of them were found unfit for human consumption.

The laboratory listed several causes in its report for declaring the samples unfit for human consumption, including the existence of microbes or different chemicals, fungus, bacteria, high levels of chloride and other substances. Some of the unfit products were found to have expired or to be violating the product specifications' card which stipulate that each product or its package should have its ingredients translated into Arabic.

The report also showed that the unfit food items included dairy products, drinking water, beverages, cereals, poultry, meat, seafood, fast-food items, vegetables and fruits.
