Staff and inmates give up smoking in Al Ain prison

AL AIN — It is easy to frame rules and force people to follow them, but the head of a prison believes in persuading people to exercise self-restraint. Rightly enough, this approach has borne fruits and Al Ain Central Prison is now a smoke-free zone.

The prison, which is part of Abu Dhabi Police General Directorate, had introduced smoking ban on the administrative staff and prisoners in January this year.

Major Abdulla Al Shihhy, head of Al Ain Central Prison, said the move aimed at preserving a healthy environment for employees and prisoners. It was also an attempt to reduce health risks, besides providing a chance to those who wished to give up smoking.

As part of the awareness campaign, the prison authorities organised lectures for the staff as well as prisoners in order to encourage them to kick the habit.

The awareness campaign was organised with the help of Tawam Hospital, Al Ain Preventive Medicine, General Authority of Awqaf, Public Relations Section of Al Ain Police and Drugs Combating Sector.

“During the campaign, blood samples of prisoners were taken to check nicotine content,” he pointed out.
