Speeding car kills sleeping man

DUBAI - A Pakistani man, who was taking an afternoon nap at a carpet and handicraft outlet on the outskirts of Dubai, died after a car rammed the shop, police said yesterday.

The tragedy occurred in the Muzairee area on the way to Hatta.

Witnesses and police said that the man was tired as he was fasting and wanted to take a nap in the afternoon to gain some strength in order to start work after breaking the fast.

Police identified the victim as A.A.H. The accused, A. S., was speeding towards Hatta, ignoring the speed limit on the General Hatta Road.

The car veered, hitting the right pavement and overturning towards shops that displayed carpets, pottery gifts and novelty items outside the outlets.

The car damaged all displayed items and hit the man who was sleeping inside one of the shops.

He sustained injuries and died shortly after the accident. The accused also sustained serious injuries.
