Shaikh Saud bin Saqer Al Qasimi, RAK Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler, along with the U.A.E. Department of Civilian Aviation, last week granted clearance to the US-based business to operate sub-orbital space-flights in RAK air space.

Interviewed by Khaleej Times, a cross-section of the RAK residents said that the move is a real boost to the emirate‚s different economic and social sectors. Others said that the new project would add a new touch to the emirate as an emerging tourist, economic and industrial hub.

''It would give a great push to the emirate's economy,'' Najeeb Al Shamsi, Director-General of RAK Economic Department (RED), said. Besides, it would help in attracting more financial resources to the emirate's markets, he said. Various parties, including RAK Government, would take part in the $256 million project. Space Adventures said that it has received commitments to the tune of $30 million so far.

The company, one of the pioneers in space tourism worldwide, had arranged orbital flights for US businessman Dennis Tito in April 2001, and South African Internet tycoon Mark Shuttleworth in April 2002, both via Russian spacecraft to the International Space Station. ''It would be a great excitement to have the experience of zero gravity from here,'' a UAE national woman told Khaleej Times on condition of anonymity. The company said that cost of the ticket would as cheap as $100,000 or about Dh370,000 per person.
