The advisory was issued in the light of the ongoing hostage crisis involving 23 South Korean aid volunteers, two of whom have been killed by the Taleban militants.

Park Jae Yang, a visiting Press attache from the South Korean embassy in Cairo, Egypt, told Khaleej Times that the diplomatic mission in Abu Dhabi has launched a media campaign to inform South Korean nationals about the travel ban to Afghanistan.

“We are advising South Koreans through the local media, not just in the UAE but in other parts of the Middle East, to refrain from travelling to Afghanistan for the time being,” he said.

Refusing to comment on the measures being undertaken by Middle East-based South Korean diplomatic missions in relation to the crisis, Park, however, stated that a “proper forum” of embassy officials and members of the Press will be held soon in Dubai to discuss the issue.

The issue of South Korean hostages has sparked a worldwide debate on the “hostage-prisoner swap” strategy that the Taleban captors have been demanding.
