The accused, a mechanic, reportedly stabbed his father seven times for refusing to give him “a few dirhams”. The incident happened in a garage where the father was praying. The suspect claimed he had not had any prior arguments with his father.

The suspect, in a statement to the police, said he woke up at the crack of dawn, drew a kitchen knife and crept downstairs to the garage to find his father offering the Fajr prayer. He asked him for a “few dirhams” and, when he was refused, stabbed him three times in the abdomen and four times in the back.

Two witnesses, when questioned by the police, said they reached the garage on hearing a ruckus and found the victim in a pool of blood hugging his father. One of the witnesses then overpowered the suspect while other called the police.

Police said the accused had entered into arguments with other workers in the garage before and was admitted to a hospital for 15 days for treating mental illness.

“The accused had been suffering from frequent mental disorders,” Chief of the Self Crime Section of Abu Dhabi police, Major Al Kaabi, said.
