The celebration came in response to UN General Assembly resolution 181 on the partition of Palestine adopted by the international organisation on November 29, 1947. Since 1977, November 29 has been observed by the UN and by member states as the 'International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People'. In December 1999, the General Assembly requested member states to continue to give wide publicity to the Day.

During the celebration, the UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People promotes international support for the achievement by the Palestinian people of their rights, and for a peaceful settlement of the Palestine issue.

UN member states are encouraged to continue to give the widest support and publicity to the observance of the Day of Solidarity.
