“Recently, we felt there was an increase in the number of tourist visa applicants in line with the World Cup. The hike picked up around May but we cannot provide an exact figure because we have not counted the total number of applications that we have received” the source, who requested anonymity told Khaleej Times.

The consular staff, however, said it is safe to assume that the figure surged by about 25 per cent during the past month as there was a growing number of football fans who were keen on personally watching the games in Germany. The Fifa World Cup 2006 will be held from June 9 to July 9.

The source said they followed the usual procedure for all applications and that they did not offer any special arrangements such as urgent release of visas. Likewise, as per consular policies, processing time for visa applications depends on the nationality of applicants.

According to the consulate-general's official web site, for nationals of the UAE and most GCC countries, the normal processing period is between 2-3 days.

However, applications of other Arab nationals from countries such as Syria, Yemen, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, and Jordan, take about 9-12 days to process. The complete list of visa requirements is available on the German Consulate General's web site at http:// www.dubai.diplo.de. Anticipation for the world's largest sporting event has swept various countries over the past months. The 18th World Cup is expected to feature 64 matches to be played in 12 German cities.
