Smart gates at Dubai Terminal 3 from Jan 1

Passengers at Terminal 3 of Dubai International Airport can check in and check out through smart e-gates from January 1 next year.

Maj-Gen Mohammad Ahmed Al Marri, Director-General of the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA), said this while speaking at India Club on Wednesday.

“The directorate, in response to the increasing number of passengers (using the Dubai International Airport) — record one million in July this year — is fixing smart e-gates to ease passengers’ suffering, provide faster, easier and more accurate and secure services, and cope with the latest and ever-changing technologies.

“As such, passengers do not have to use e-gate cards; they may only use their machine-readable passports to smoothly finish their entry and exit transactions,” he said.

Smart e-gates will be fixed in all Dubai airports. Maj-Gen Al Marri noted that there will be an underground train to transport passengers at the ongoing extension of Terminal 3. “We are the first and mostly the only government department to provide our services round the clock, particularly with an office recently opened at Terminal 3.”

He said the GDRFA in Dubai is thinking of the future while making these electronic changes.

Expecting a brighter future for the UAE and Dubai, he said while security is critical and without which everything turns futile, partnership is indispensable to improve immigration services and face rising challenges and difficulties. “We should talk to you and all our partners to know your actual needs, ideas, complaints and suggestions.” Indicating that competition has become very stiff, and everybody is trying to be the best, Maj-Gen Al Marri said nobody will come back to Dubai “if we do not provide the best services”.

“Good service attracts people to us and enhance their loyalty.”

Maj-Gen Al Marri underscored that his staff members are regularly educated and trained to be the best, and maintain a life-time relationship with customers for whom “we do our best to provide excellent services”.

“We also believe in team work where employees believe in and enjoy their job in a healthy environment; our production line is based on integration rather than competition; just like everybody integrally does their job while manufacturing a car,” he added.

Affirming the importance of proper communication with everybody, he said Dubai has become a premier hub in the region because “we do believe that excellence is a start not an end; and we may not improve our services without your cooperation”.

Noting that the India Club was established 48 years back with support and encouragement from the late Shaikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Dr Ram Buxani, chairman of the club, said the UAE, hosting expatriates from over 200 countries with different cultures and priorities, obviously is exposed to various challenges.

“The way the GDRFA in Dubai handles those issues is indeed remarkable. It is amazing to see that in spite of such diversity, Dubai remains one of the most safe, secure and peaceful places to live.”

The function was attended by GDRFA senior officials as well as Consul-General of India in Dubai Sanjay Verma, and a group of Indian businessmen and residents.
