According to the head of the bus fleet, though the new vehicles were delivered this month, the shortage of drivers has hampered the launch of the new routes and buses.

Fahd Al Awadi, General Manager of KGL, the Kuwaiti company managing the bus fleet for the Sharjah Public Transport Corporation (SPTC), said, “Currently 10 drivers are undergoing their driving tests in Sharjah. But the procedure is slow and stretched.

“It is only after these 10 get their licence, the next batch of 10 will be sent for training,” he said. “We have a long waiting period until the drivers qualify.”

Al Awadi added that another batch of buses would be delivered in a couple of months. “We have postponed the launch of new routes since we are facing the shortage (of drivers),” he said.

In November, the SPTC launched its fourth bus route (number 3) in the emirate.

Currently, the SPTC is operating 40 buses on different routes.

The corporation also plans to introduce a dedicated lane for the buses so as to cut travel time.

Each SPTC bus can accommodate up to 60 people and the fare is Dh3.50. At least 13,000-15,000 passengers use the service everyday.
