Skin specialist caters to fashion-conscious UAE

ABU DHABI — It is always a wonderful feeling to serve a society that has given you in large measure its love, affection and hospitality, and above all the requisites of sound education that stands you in good stead for all times to come.

This is what prompted Dr Srinivasa Menon, dermatologist and skin laser specialist, to start his own Health & Style Medical Centre, in the heart of the capital on Hamdan Street.

A second generation resident, who had his education up to the secondary school level here, said that in an amazingly short span of time, people's concept of health care, particularly when it comes to the skin, has undergone a dramatic transformation as their shift in emphasis now includes sophisticated concepts of aesthetics.

Earlier, the citizens were satisfied with just a healthy skin, but now they want it to be enhanced by a 'happy and aesthetically appealing' skin as well, to showcase a whole new range of vibe and look, as they tend to be fashion-conscious in the UAE which is very much the happening quarters, Dr Menon averred.

Research has shown that the type of skin in the Middle East falls into the 3, 4 and 5 categories, as expounded by Pitz Patrick of the Harvard Medical School, calling for a specific approach to their healthcare needs.

Now inputs from medical research from here have led to formulations that are fine-tuned to cater to the local skin. Further, the lifestyles of people here, once exposed heavily to the blazing sun and arid climate, have yielded place to the comforts of air-conditioned environment and protected work sites. So have the dietary habits changed.

Dr Menon, whose special interest is dermatoaesthetics and holds membership in the American Academy of Dermatology, the European Academy of Dermatology and the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery, went on the say; "We have been the pioneers to bring in customised treatment for health and skin care in this region."

This enables the medical centre to treat not only conventional skin problems but also for those who are not happy with an undone eyebrow, the smallest mole on the face and lines that have appeared early to give a feeling of ageing, he said.

Dr Menon's client base includes personalities from the fashion world, TV presenters and aspiring models and beauty queens, from all age groups from pre-teens to post-manopause. His experience shows that men are also almost equally obsessed with pruning their looks.

An advantage of his dermatoaesthetic treatment is that it is safe, effective and painless with virtually no recovery time. "Having stayed here so long, I have been able to interact with the local population as well, and look forward to serve in my capacity as a specialist, to give the benefits of health and skin care to further enhance the profiles of their form and feature, face and limbs," is Dr Menon's submission.
