Voicing concern over the trend, Jassim Al Makki, head of the Department of Family Guidance and Services in Ras Al Khaimah Courts, said there was an urgent need to reduce the occurrence of family disputes.

He attributed the increase to the lack of pre-marital guidance, especially among the young couples, and non-adherence to the teachings of Islam.

Al Makki noted that 191 people had filed for divorce. The department has so far settled 126 cases amicably and is working hard to ensure amicable settlement in other family disputes as well.

He noted that family disputes cause serious social and psychological effects on not only couples but alsotheir children.

The official stressed that a sufficient period of time before engagement and stricter pre-marriage guidance and conditions are required before the couples are united in marriage.

Al Makki also said that there was a need to introduce pre-marital qualifying courses to reduce the incidence of divorce among Emiratis andexpatriates. Mohammed Abul Rahman, an elderly Emirati, said families need to adhere to the Islamic teachings as this would help the married couples to have mercy and kindness upon in each.

He also urged the parents and couples who are getting into marriage to first know each other better and see if they can make their marriage successful.

“It is essential for parents to spend more time in knowing better about the man proposing to marry their daughter. Young men and women should also not hurry into tying the knot before knowing each other to avoid family disputes which have, on many occasions, resulted in divorces,” said Abdul Rahman.
