According to Sharjah Intercity Transport Manager Adel Al Hosany, more than 240,000 people used public transport buses during the Eid and National Day holidays. “The bus stations of Sharjah as well as the Eastern and Central regions were crowded, particularly during the last two holidays, compared with that during the previous feast.”
Al Hosany said the Sharjah-Dubai route topped the list in terms of the number of commuters using it. “As many as 162,482 passengers rode Sharjah public buses during the last consecutive 10-day holidays.”
He added that the recently launched bus service in the Eastern and Western regions were growing in popularity with residents. “The new bus service is much welcomed along the cities of Eastern Coast, particularly Kalbaa, Khor Fakkan, and Dibba Al Hisn.”
Al Hosany said the Sharjah-Abu Dhabi route saw 26,336 passengers during the holidays. Meanwhile, 13,804 passengers have taken the Sharjah public buses to and from the emirate’s different cities. “The Sharjah-Ajman route saw 11,026 commuters, followed by Sharjah-Khor Fakkan with 8,445 passengers, Sharjah-Al Ain route with 8,440, Sharjah-Ras Al Khaimah route with 5,568 passengers, and Sharjah-Umm Al Quwain route with 1,532 passengers,” Al Hosany explained.
Barber Abdul Raof Ahmed, who is from Pakistani, said he uses Sharjah public transport daily. “I prefer buses to any other means of transport. It is cheap and available most of the time. I took the buses to visit my friends in Sharjah city during the Eid holidays.”
