The new awareness drive aims to ensure that the motorists using various internal and external roads of the emirate check the condition of their vehicles’ tyres before setting out from their houses or offices.

During the campaign, brochures in Arabic and English will be distributed among motorists and truck drivers to educate them about the importance of regularly checking the safety of their tyres and the dangers of driving vehicles with worn-out or old tyres.

A top official at the Traffic Awareness and Media Department of the Sharjah Police said the condition of car tyres is a major factor for causing fatal road accidents. “This time of the year witnesses very hot temperatures, which affect the asphalt on the roads, leading to cracks. The cracks, in turn, cause tyre-bursts. During summer, more people travel by cars and we witness more accidents linked to (worn-out or old) car tyres. They should double-check the safety of their cars and tyres before travelling,” he said.

He also urged motorists to be careful when they change their car’s flat tyres, “as deaths and injuries have been reported” when people pull over to change tyres.
