Three new parks are expected to open for public at Al Madifi, Al Lololiya and Al Zbara areas during the next three months, the source said, noting that the civic body has also drawn up designs to construct a major park at Al Saij area in Diba Al Hosn.

"Several beautification projects are being executed by the civic body at different sites in the emirate such as Al Nahda bridge and Al Khan Corniche. Afforestation projects are also executed at different roads, roundabouts and other public areas," the source added.

After Sharjah Municipality bagged the first prize of the City Greening Competition which was organised by the Arab Cities Organisation (ACO), the civic body published a number of publications highlighting the achievements in this field, the source said.

He added that the prize is the second accomplishment for Sharjah in less than three years in the field of environment and greenery since the emirate won in the year 2000 the second position of the environment awareness award organised by ACO.

"In this context, a statistical book comprising 158 pages has been issued. It contains details about the philosophy of Sharjah in the afforestation field, the projects it has carried out including the parks, recreational areas, public squares, green belts and roundabouts," he noted.

The source explained that the book highlights the civic body's policy in selecting the types of trees and flowers that are being planted, in addition to the keenness to fully equip the public and community parks with play areas for children, water fountains, shaded spaces, special facilities for the people with special needs as well as security and safety.

"A section of the book talks about the problems and obstacles faced by Sharjah Municipality in its drive to spreading the green colour and how it has encountered them," the source said.

Talking about the civic body's accomplishments during 2002, he added that the municipality has planted 1.02 million square metres of land with trees. It also planted trees on the sides of the roads.

" Last year, the municipality installed 267,711 square metres of irrigation pipes and planted about 13,126 palm trees at different sites in the emirate," the source said.

He noted that due to the importance of the palm tree for the environment and being part of the country's culture and heritage, the municipality has set up a special unit at the horticulture section to irrigate and plant palm trees.

The unit will also respond to the public's inquiries on how to plant and take care of palm trees.
