Shaikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, wife of His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, the Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, UNHCR Eminent Advocate for Refugee Children, and Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs, received the "Golden Erbse" Award from Marchenland (the German Centre For Fairy Tale Culture).
The award is in recognition of her outstanding efforts in the humanitarian field and social work as well as her advocacy for refugee children, cancer patients, the needy and the vulnerable.
The honour is also in appreciation of Shaikha Jawaher's significant initiatives to support women's empowerment in all fields, within the UAE, the Arab region and the world. She is the first Arab personality to receive the award since its inception in 2005.
The Golden Erbse Award is managed by the German Centre for Fairy Tale Culture and recognises public and political figures and artists for their social and humanitarian contributions. The award is given to those who are real life fairy tale heroes, fighting for the greater good and advocating for human rights across the world.
The awarding ceremony took place at the German Music House in Berlin as part of the 26th Berlin Fairy Tale Days, with representatives from more than 20 Arab and foreign countries and a large number of celebrities, as well as fans of children's literature and human rights activists. Prof. Dr. Norbert Lammert, speaker of the German parliament, Bundestag, was also bestowed with the Golden Erbse Award for his efforts in humanitarian and social work.
Michael Müller, Governing Mayor of Berlin; Prof. Monika Grütters, German Minister of Culture and Media; Juma Mubarak Al Junaibi, UAE's Ambassador in Germany; envoys from different Arab countries; Mona Kamil, Head of the Arab League Mission in Berlin, and Arab and European public figures attended the ceremony.
Sheikha Jawaher said: "Our world is in urgent need for us to be humane and work collaboratively to serve humanity and ensure the future of mankind. Every father and mother needs to be the fairytale hero in their child's eyes, and their role model, doing good, promoting love, peace and brotherhood throughout the world."
"What hurts me most is to see children and women being the victims of conflict, wars and crisis that are happening in numerous parts of the world. They are the victims of violence, displacement and violation of their basic human rights. What motivates me is to advocate on their behalf and support them. I fear for the future of children today, our children are the future of the entire world. We all must stand by the side of those children and women and make them the heroes of their own stories, because we want them to tell their children and grandchildren that there is always hope as long as there are human beings."
Shaikha Jawaher praised the major humanitarian role played by the German government in receiving refugees and providing them with the necessary protection and care, particularly Syrian refugees and expressed her hope that conflicts and wars would come to an end in the region, so people can enjoy peace and all refuges could return home and rebuild their nations.
The humanitarian initiatives launched by Shaikha Jawaher Al Qasimi have served as milestones in the lives of millions of people worldwide.
