Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (SEWA) has innovated two systems for storing ground water and detecting hidden water leakage in villas and houses as part of the UAE Innovation Week.

The two projects were approved by the Ministry of Energy, which will refer it to the cabinet for funding and promoting it outside the country.

Speaking to Khaleej Times, Dr. Rashid Al Leem, Chairman of SEWA, said that the first project includes the operation of the first system of storing ground water in the area. The system is known in the world as aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) and only used in the limited ground layers, but SEWA has developed the system to be used in unlimited ground layers.

The second project is a system to the hidden leakage of water in houses, villa and residential buildings, and can help reduce water consumption, and lower water bills.

Isam Al Muaala, Director of Water Department in SEWA, said that the ground water storing system includes the digging of wells and installing of the innovative operational system systems that will increase the capacity of ground water storage from 5 million gallons to 30 million gallons then to 50 million gallons by end of 2015.

SEWA will be working on developing the project to reach 500 million gallon to store in the ground layers. The stored water will be used during the time of scarcity and shortage of water for any reasons.

The system will be installed in mosques, schools, public parks and many areas to prevent the wastage of water.
