Three government departments in Dubai have joined hands to organise a single ceremony for 79 of its employees.
Dubai Wedding, as it is called, seeks to honour the directives of the President, His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, on avoiding extravagance in such ceremonies.
Come Tuesday, Zabeel Park will witness a dazzling ceremony in which brides and grooms working with the Dubai Municipality, Dubai Water and Electricity Authority and the Department of Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities will solemnise their nuptials.
“Organising these weddings are practical steps towards the consolidation of the behaviour of rational spending on weddings,” said Obaid Salem Al Shamsi, Assistant Director General of Dubai Municipality.
This is not something new for the municipality. It has been conducting mass wedding ceremonies for its employees for eight years now.
However, the participation of other departments makes the scale this year unprecedented.
“Performances of traditional troupes, laser displays, fireworks and folklore shows will mark the occasion,” said Al Shamsi, who is in charge of International Affairs and Partnerships Sector at the civic body.
Officials of the three departments said at a press conference on Thursday that all expenses for the “Dubai Wedding” will be borne by the Deputy Ruler of Dubai, UAE Minister of Finance, and the Chairman of Dubai Municipality.
To be attended by a large number of VIPs, the ceremony will see 43 employees from DEWA, 26 from DM and 10 from DIACA entering matrimony.
The Municipality has set up a committee to conduct a series of “grooming” sessions for the participating employees. Their better halves will throw a gala dinner at the Zabeel Park Stadium.
