Adil Ali Al Deek, who heads the Health Department at the Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) Municipality, said the inspectors raided these restaurants after getting complaints about the sale of stale food.

During their inspections, the inspectors found that the restaurants were mixing freshly prepared food with helpings of leftovers from the fridge.

He said these restaurants had poor hygiene standards with flies, rodents and insects all over the place.

The restaurants have been ordered shut for two days and the premises cleaned up.

The owners of the restaurants were also issued with warning letters.

According to Adil, inspectors had also slapped Dh2,000 as fine on the owners of two other restaurants whose cooks were found smoking in the kitchens.

The inspectors also suspended nearly 14 workers in different restaurants for not possessing health cards.

These workers will only resume work after obtaining health cards from the Ras Al Khaimah Municipality.
