Sectors upbeat about Dubai-Fujairah highway

FUJAIRAH - Various sectors are upbeat about the positive effects the Dh1.2-billion six-lane Dubai-Fujairah highway would have on the emirate when it is opened for traffic in 2010. Twenty-five per cent of the construction of the 45-km-long highway has been completed.

Captain Musa Murad, Director of the Fujairah Seaport, said, “The highway will save time and effort. It is expected to stimulate cargo movement, as it will reduce the distance between Fujairah and other emirates.”

Khalid Al Mazrue, Director of the Fujairah Airport, said, “The highway will actually save time for tourism companies as well as businessmen. It will reflect positively on shipment activities from and to the Fujairah Airport, especially towards East Asia.”

Khalid Al Jasim, Director of the Fujairah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said the new highway would spur economic growth in the emirate, and attract more investments that would contribute to the overall growth.

Sharif Al Awadi, Head of the Fujairah Free Zone, said the highway would attract new companies, as it would link the emirate to Dubai. This would have a positive impact on the new projects in the free zone.

Shaikh Saeed Al Sharqi, Chairman of the Fujairah Tourism Office, sees a bright future for tourism in the emirate. “The new highway would stimulate tourism growth. There would be more tourists coming from Dubai, as the highway would allow them to spend a part of their day in Fujairah without having to spend long hours on the road.

Ibrahim Al Wahaby, Executive Manager at the Ministry of Public Works, said the project would cost Dh1.2 billion, and the carriageway (three lanes in each direction) was designed according to international standards to meet the growing demand for transportation in the country. As much as 25 per cent of the project had been completed and the highway was expected to be completed by 2010.
