The Sheffield Secondary Private School in Dubai sent brochures to students’ parents announcing enrolment of pupils up to Grade XII for the current academic year, in clear violation of the Ministry of Education’s regulations, which allow registration only up to Grade IX.

The school has also specified a tuition fee of Dh12,000 per annum in addition to other fees.

The Assistant Under-Secretary for Private Education, Jumaa Salaam, said that the school had committed an illegal act for which it will be held accountable, adding that no one was above the law.

Namaa Al Aryan, Director of Foreign Schools Department, said that addition of grades without official authorisation is a violation of Article 4 of the ministerial decree No. 9 of the year 2001, which would necessitate the ministry to exact fines of Dh10,000 on violating schools.

She said that Sheffield School was aware of the regulations. She further said that perhaps the amount of fines was not high enough to deter violators, adding and that it was necessary to increase their value.
