Some of the residents told Khaleej Times that the decision has left them with no choice but to hunt for alternative accommodation. However, finding houses at cheap rates is impossible when the rents have skyrocketed in Dubai, they complained.

Residents said they were informed about six months ago to vacate their villas once their tenancy contracts expire.

The majority of the villas in the Satwa area are occupied by bachelors, mostly blue-collared workers.

“I don’t know what to do. I pay a very nominal price for the villa and have been living in the area for several years. If they are forcing us to move out, they should make arrangements to give some alternative place for us to stay,” said M.K., an Indian national.

Many people said they were paying Dh5,000 to Dh7,000 annually for a whole villa.

According the sources in the Dubai Municipality, a lot of families have complained about the problems they are facing due to the presence of bachelors in the area.

They also said many families have sublet some rooms to the bachelors which is illegal. Some companies too have taken villas on rent to accommodate their workers.

“We have already stated that bachelors cannot stay in the villas. Moreover, subletting of houses is illegal. The Dubai Municipality is not looking after the demolition work. But we are taking action against the bachelors who are staying in the villas and the subletting practice,” said an official in the Building Inspection Section of the municipality.

“I have been living in a villa in this area for the past 10 years. I have got a big family. Under no circumstances, I will break the law by subletting the rooms. Many villas are being demolished at the moment. It is impossible to find an accommodation at these cheap rates in Dubai anymore. I don’t know what to do if we are forced to move out,” said A.K., another resident.

An engineer of the Land Department refused to comment when contacted.
