RAS AL KHAIMAH — He came to the UAE merely 20 days ago looking for greener pastures to support his family, but ended up bedridden, his leg paralysed after a heap of sand and stones fell on him while at work.
The accident took place when the Indian labourer was filling the foundations of an under construction building in Al Jeer area. Speaking to Khaleej Times about his horrible experience, Peter Israiel said: “The avalanche roared like a thunderstorm. It was a terrible. I have never experienced something like this before.
“Suddenly everything became dark around me and I lost consciousness under the heavy weight of sand and rocks,” the 36-year-old Peter added.
Israiel’s co-workers struggled to free him from under the rubble and brought him to the Shaam Hospital where doctors transferred him to Saqer Hospital.
“X-rays showed that my back is broken and now I am paralysed. I can’t move below my waist and doctors told me that chance of my recovery is very slight.”
He also underwent a surgical procedure for the wounds and scratches on his back.
“I don’t know what to do if I am sent back to my country without compensation because I have no money to pay for treatment and other expenses,” he said.
Israiel, who hails from Kerala, India, is the only breadwinner of five-member family in India.
“I have two daughters, Roshma, 9, and Renesha, 7, my wife Helanmery and very old parents and all of them depend entirely on me to earn their living,” he added.
“I have got a Rs87,000 loan with 3 per cent interest rate per month that I have to pay it back,” he said.
He called upon the Indian Consulate, philanthropists and fellow Indians to extend help to him.
