Senior officials of the RTA said that addition or creation of new parking lots was being considered and there were plans to extend the parking time to a maximum of two hours.

The Karama area is currently facing a mammoth car parking problem. Car owners complain that they have to waste a lot of time to find parking space at the end of the day. With not enough parking space available in the area, people resort to parking their vehicles on the pavements hindering the movement of pedestrians. To add to the problem, a lot of cars parked by the roadsides also obstruct the movement of other vehicles.

Hussain Al Banna, Acting Director of the Road Fees and Parking Department in the RTA, told Khaleej Times that the department was aware of the mess. "We know about the troubles there and are taking quite a few steps. We plan to restrict the movement of private vehicles in some areas of Karama."

"Only public transport vehicles would be able to ply. The areas where this problem is perennial are being looked into at the moment. Also, we plan to arrange for a one-way traffic system in some areas in addition to encouraging the people to use public transport. We would be coming up with new parking slots so that the people get more parking spaces. Also, we are studying the best practices that have been implemented worldwide and trying to implement those here too," he added.

Al Banna further stated that the Karama area would have no new 'paid parking' lots for now. "We are not coming up with any new 'paid parking' lots in the area," said Banna.

The official added that plans were under way to convert some of the surface car parks available to multi-storeyed car parking facilities. "The idea is being looked into and the RTA is at present studying its feasibility. A multi-car parking facility takes less space and can accommodate a larger number of vehicles. This plan is not just for Karama but for other areas in Dubai as well," he stressed.

Al Banna opined that a comprehensive plan had been drafted to resolve the parking-related problems in areas such as Karama, Al Raffa etc. "This includes extension of parking time to a maximum of two hours, stricter control of illegal parking slots etc. These measures will significantly enhance the turnover and alleviate parking-related problems," said the official.
