The shops were caught during surprise inspections that were carried out on various shops by the public health inspectors during the weekend.

Adil Ali Al Suwaid, who heads the civic body’s Environmental and Health Department said that the shops were found selling different kinds of fruits and vegetables which were spoilt.

“Some of the rotten products were being mixed with good ones to cheat people. Sometimes it is difficult for the customers to notice the bad products while buying as many are in hurry,” said Al Suwaid.

The inspectors checked the products and found out that most of these products were not fit for consumption.

He explained that they have on many occasions received complaints from residents about certain shops selling them rotten and expired food products, but in most cases the customers notice the products when they have already reached home.

Al Suwaid noted that fines were also imposed the errant shop owners for their failure to comply with the public health regulations. The shop owners were also issued with official warnings in which they pledged not to repeat the violations.

The official said that they have intensified the inspection campaigns to monitor the various supermarkets, shops, restaurants and grocery shops in the emirate to ensure proper hygiene and to promote the food quality and standards in the emirate.

He warned that commercial licenses for the businesses that repeat the violations would be seized.
