Addressing a function here to mark the Municipalities Week that began here on Saturday, Engineer Hamdan called on the citizens not to be lured by cheap goods and buy spurious merchandise.

Children also should also be warned against running after poor products advertised on TV with the objective of making easy profits, he said.

The celebration of the week that will conclude on April 20 has the theme ‘Municipalities and Protection of the Consumer’.

The ceremony was attended by Shaikh Hamad bin Saif Al Sharqi and Obeid bin Eissa Ahmad, the Assistant Secretary-General of municipalities.

Obeid bin Eissa focused on the role of municipalities in protecting the consumer and the keenness of the authorities in maintaining public health and welfare and spreading environmental awareness.

He encouraged all society members, service bodies and the media to join hands with the municipalities to realise the prime goal of sustaining a pollution-free environment.

Some citizens, however, said the municipality’s efforts had scope for improvement and called for activating a Consumer Protection Society. Abdullah Hassan, a Fujairah citizen, said Fujairah is still distant from CPS activities, despite its vital role in providing the consumer with the bulletins, which spread awareness about the harmful food products identified by international, American and/or European organisations.
